Super hip-n’-chic music blog Missing Toof just retroed some love for Them Jeans and I’s Final Countdown remix.

Them Jeans posted a couple pics of me and Blu Jemz DJing the Vans Syndicate party at the Vine Bar on Friday night. Thanks to Berto and the Syndicate dudes who let me play all of the jams I liked to dance to in high school. I should also thank Jeanzy Jase for having needles and expertise when I didn’t.

The dudes from Point Blank recently blogged LA’s best new food emporium, Scoops Ice Cream. Myself and some MOT’s (members of the tribe to the goyim out there), who also happen to be members of the Stüssy Tribe grubbed some of the finest ice cream out. Check out the Point Blank blog for flicks.

Los Angeles is unstoppable right now. Much like Brooklyn’s party scene and Scando power, there’s no halting the coolness that’s radiating through the sprawling smog, traversing the Atlantic and landing on my desk in the form of a nicely packaged compact disc. And, as a bonus, it’s full of wondrous beats, too. This morning the debut album from LA native Antimc, known to his Mom and Pops as Matthew Alsberg unfolded itself in my headphones. Beats were breaking and samples were tweaking whilst the acidy synth lines reminded me that new wave can rock in a post hip-hop environment. This is LA, not NYC, after all. Although It’s Free, But It’s Not Cheap ticks all the immediate boxes of your average undergroung, off kilter, mostly instrumental rap record: it’s on Mush, features vocals from Busdriver and Fog, and was made with an E-Mu SP-1200, Ensoniq ASR-10 and Akai MPC-2000XL… trust me, this is not that record. Well, actually, there are bits of that record with an At The Drive In-esque kick in the balls. And a lil’ bit of screaming. It’s just - how can we put this? fresher.

Busdriver wordt wel eens een avant-garde mc genoemd. Dat heeft waarschijnlijk meer te maken met zijn afwijkende stijl van rappen in vergelijking met de meer conventionelere hiphop van heden ten dage. Busdriver’s flow blinkt qua ritme uit in originaliteit. Zijn stijl levert hem waarschijnlijk evenveel voor- als tegenstanders op. Dat zal ook gelden voor Road Kill Overcoat. Het nummer Sun Showers is het meest representatief voor dit album. Het flirt met pop, rock en electro. Tel daarbij op de intelligente raps en de geflipte stijl van Busdriver en je bent verkocht. Kan het nog gekker? Welja, Hij gooit er ook nog een gastbijdrage van CocoRosie’s Bianca Casady tegenaan. Busdriver levert zelf ook een gastbijdrage op Antimc’s It’s Free But It’s Not Cheap. Deze multi-instrumentalist uit Los Angeles levert een prachtige plaat af. Antimc is beïnvloed door punk, hiphop, jazz en postrock. De elektronische beats vormen een geplaveide baan voor een keur aan redelijk onbekende vocalisten die de revue passeren. De tracks zweven ergens tussen schizofreen en geniaal in. Dit album duurt gewoonweg te kort en schreeuwt nu al om een langere opvolger. - Niek Baudoin

As if it wasn’t enough to feature “Bellies Full of Rain” in their fantastic Music That Matters podcast #38, the loving people at KEXP have made the track their “Song of the Day” for Friday, Feb. 23, 2007. YES! Thanks KEXP. Hopefully I’ll be playing in Seattle sometime soon and we can hang out.

Matthew Alsberg, plus connu sous le pseudonyme d’Antimc, est un producteur multi-instrumentiste (guitare, piano, basse, trombone…) de Los Angeles maniant synthés, samplers et boîtes à rythmes depuis maintenant un peu plus d’une dizaine d’années. It’s Free, But It’s Not Cheap est son premier album solo, mais Antimc a su au cours de cette décennie se tailler une solide réputation au sein de la foisonnante scène indépendante de L.A.. Compagnon de route du Shapeshifter Radioinactive le temps d’un Free Kamal (2004) intéressant à défaut d’être inoubliable, il a également fait partie de la formation Log Cabin (Murs, Scarub, Eligh…) et a accompagné sur scène Busdriver, Boom Bip, Alias ou encore cLOUDDEAD. Sa première véritable trace discographique solo est le maxi Run, sorti en 2003 sur le label Mush. Bichonnant son synthé pour en tirer mélodies entêtantes et basses à la limite de la saturation, Antimc bâtit un édifice sonore à la fois chaotique et harmonieux – dans tous les cas constamment maîtrisé. Car, outre son talent, ce que le producteur de la cité des anges démontre avec brio sur chacun des neuf titres composant It’s Free, But It’s Not Cheap, c’est son imposante polyvalence. Prenons quelques exemples. Le morceau d’ouverture, “Ten Days Out,” démarre, avec son bouillonnement électronique et sa rythmique puissante et saccadée, comme un titre d’électro-rap classique. Mais il dérive peu à peu vers le rock ; pour s’achever finalement dans un génial dégueulis de guitares électriques – fusion quasi-parfaite de ces deux univers, ce premier titre durant près de sept minutes est l’un des temps forts du disque. Punk, crunk et électro se mélangent ensuite avec bonheur dans “Cesspool City” dont les paroles, scandées par un Anthony Anzalone vraisemblablement chargé, sont d’une débilité réjouissante : “We’re fuckin’ up! We’re fuckin’ up again! All dicks are lined up hard and ready to fuck! Tell the fuckin’ whore to piss on your chest! No thoughts, no rights, fuckin’ slaves and fist fights!”. Plus loin, “The Nogoodnick” est un titre pop-folk rappelant le remarquable travail de Why? sur Elephant Eyelash, et construit autour de quelques notes de guitare, d’un xylophone et de cloches. “Single Life” évolue dans un registre franchement ambient/lounge (avec batterie discrète, percus africaines et compo atmosphérique) et Antimc clôt son It’s Free, But It’s Not Cheap par une expérimentation pop-psychédélique-planante réussie, “… Or I May Just Dream (My Life Away).” Contrairement à ce que pourrait laisser supposer cette large palette de styles, l’album est tout sauf incohérent ; et les trois titres rappés, habilement disposés de manière à jalonner l’écoute, servent de fil d’Ariane à l’auditeur qui se retrouverait déboussolé dans ce labyrinthe musical. Excellents, les trois MC’s invités – les californiens Busdriver et Saafir, le Canadien Cadence Weapon – viennent parfaire l’ensemble en s’adaptant impeccablement aux instrumentaux d’Antimc. Alternant titres instrumentaux en soliste et morceaux en compagnie d’invités provenant d’horizons différents, Antimc parvient ici à définir son univers : un monde très électronique, sans barrières, dans lequel se côtoient rap, pop, folk, rock et punk sans jamais sombrer dans l’anarchie inécoutable. D’une polyvalence bluffante, il ne lasse à aucun moment – la courte durée de l’album n’y étant bien entendu pas pour rien. Riche, inspiré et maîtrisé, It’s Free, But It’s Not Cheap s’écoute en boucle.

Weird. This Canadian (or not?) political (or not?) blog called Apple Tree put together a Valentine’s Day mix. Along with the dude Her Space Holiday and Au Revoir Simone, they put my track with Clue To Kalo “… Or I May Just Dream (My Life Away).” I think that list is all people that know each other, though, so it’s kinda suspect.

Seattle, Washington’s KEXP, one of America’s largest independent radio stations, has licensed “Bellies Full of Rain” for their Music That Matters podcast series. The podcast, with over 50,000 subscribers already, is available from iTunes, Yahoo, Zune, and on their RSS feed. Thanks a bunch to the people at KEXP for this great exposure.
